Syllabus
Four modules, twelve lessons. Every lesson states what it covers and the evidence you produce for it.
1Systems and circuits3 lessons · 6 h
- R01.01
Robot subsystems
120 minIdentify sensing, computation, actuation and power in a robot.
Evidence: A block diagram explains data and energy paths separately.
- R01.02
Circuit safety and simulation
120 minBuild an LED circuit with a current-limiting resistor in simulation.
Evidence: Values and polarity are correct; a supervisor checklist covers physical use.
- R01.03
Microcontroller programming
120 minRead inputs and control outputs with a nonblocking timing loop.
Evidence: A simulated input changes output within a stated response time.
2Sensors and actuators3 lessons · 6 h
- R01.04
Digital and analogue sensors
120 minRead sensor values and convert raw measurements to useful units.
Evidence: Calibration against reference values reports observed error.
- R01.05
Noise and filtering
120 minCompare raw and moving-average readings.
Evidence: A plot explains noise reduction and increased delay.
- R01.06
Motors and drivers
120 minControl direction and speed through a suitable simulated driver.
Evidence: The design separates logic power from motor current requirements.
3Control3 lessons · 6 h
- R01.07
Encoders and motion
120 minEstimate distance from encoder counts and wheel geometry.
Evidence: Computed distance matches a provided synthetic fixture.
- R01.08
Feedback control
120 minImplement proportional or PID control on a simulated plant.
Evidence: A step response reports overshoot and settling behaviour.
- R01.09
Finite state machines
120 minImplement idle, move, avoid and fault states.
Evidence: All declared transitions have tested entry and exit conditions.
4Integration3 lessons · 6 h
- R01.10
Obstacle avoidance
120 minCombine distance readings with motion control.
Evidence: The robot avoids defined obstacles across five seeded scenarios.
- R01.11
Power and fail-safe behaviour
120 minHandle sensor timeout, low-power signal and emergency stop.
Evidence: Motor commands go to a safe state for each injected fault.
- R01.12
Integrated demonstration
120 minRun the robot task and document configuration and limitations.
Evidence: A reproducible demo includes logs and a hardware checklist if applicable.
Capstone
Create an obstacle-aware mobile robot in simulation. If a physical kit is available, repeat a supervised bench test and document simulation-to-hardware differences.
Lab environment
Electronics simulator and optional supervised kit
Lab infrastructure is not yet provisioned, so this describes the environment the course is designed for rather than one you can launch today.
