Syllabus
Four modules, twelve lessons. Every lesson states what it covers and the evidence you produce for it.
1ROS structure3 lessons · 6 h
- R02.01
ROS graph
120 minRun nodes and inspect topics, services and actions.
Evidence: A graph correctly identifies publishers and subscribers.
- R02.02
Messages and interfaces
120 minDefine and validate an interface for robot state.
Evidence: Malformed or missing state data is detected.
- R02.03
Packages and launch files
120 minCreate a package and launch a repeatable multi-node setup.
Evidence: A clean environment launches the project from documented commands.
2Robot modelling3 lessons · 6 h
- R02.04
Frames and transforms
120 minExplain coordinate frames and inspect a transform tree.
Evidence: No disconnected required frame remains in the supplied exercise.
- R02.05
Robot description
120 minModel links, joints and collision geometry.
Evidence: The model loads without invalid geometry or joint definitions.
- R02.06
Simulation bridge
120 minConnect simulated sensors and commands to ROS topics.
Evidence: A command affects the robot and sensor feedback reaches the node.
3Navigation3 lessons · 6 h
- R02.07
Odometry
120 minEstimate motion and compare it to simulated ground truth.
Evidence: A plot quantifies drift over a fixed route.
- R02.08
Mapping and localisation
120 minGenerate a map and localise the robot within it.
Evidence: The report records map settings and localisation failures.
- R02.09
Navigation planning
120 minSet goals and inspect global and local behaviour.
Evidence: The robot completes a declared route under defined conditions.
4Testing3 lessons · 6 h
- R02.10
Mission states
120 minHandle goals, cancellation, timeout and recovery.
Evidence: A cancelled mission stops cleanly without continuing motion commands.
- R02.11
Recording and replay
120 minRecord sensor and state streams for repeatable diagnosis.
Evidence: A replay reproduces a documented failure or measurement.
- R02.12
Scenario testing
120 minVary obstacle placement and sensor conditions using fixed seeds.
Evidence: A test report shows successes, failures and operating boundaries.
Capstone
Build a simulated mobile robot that follows a route, avoids obstacles and records a reproducible mission report with explicit operating limits.
Lab environment
ROS desktop sandbox
Lab infrastructure is not yet provisioned, so this describes the environment the course is designed for rather than one you can launch today.
